“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6, NKJV)

Most people stop reading that verse at the word reward and picture something they can hold. A blessing. An answer to prayer. A door that finally opens. They are not wrong that God gives these things. They are wrong about what the verse is promising.

The reward in Hebrews 11:6 is not a thing God hands you. It is God Himself.

The Things May Come. They Are Not the Prize.

God does bless diligent seekers materially and providentially. Scripture never hides that. But every earthly gift is a shadow of the real reward, never the substance of it. A man who seeks God for what God gives has not yet found what Hebrews 11:6 is talking about. He is still seeking gifts. He has not yet sought the Giver.

The diligent seeker who finally understands this stops asking God for things and starts asking to know Him. That shift, from wanting God’s hand to wanting God’s face, is the difference between religion and relationship.

How You Come to Know the Reward Is Real

You do not arrive at this conviction by being told it. You arrive at it by two roads, and Scripture puts both roads in front of every believer.

The first road is His Word. You open it seeking information about God and you close it having seen God. His holiness presses on you. His patience with Israel presses on you. His grief in Genesis 6:6, His jealousy for His people, His relentless pursuit of sinners across sixty-six books, all of it stops being material to study and becomes a Person you are meeting.

The second road is providence. This is not new revelation and it is not prophecy. God is not speaking new words today the way He spoke through the prophets and apostles (Hebrews 1:1-2). But He is still sovereign, and He still moves the circumstances of a diligent seeker’s life in ways too specific, too timed, and too repeated to call coincidence.

The first time it happens, you call it a blessing. The fifth time, the tenth time, the hundredth time, spread out over years of genuinely seeking Him, you stop calling it coincidence. You start recognizing a Person who is present and active and near. That recognition, built over time through repeated, unmistakable providence, is its own kind of knowing God, distinct from knowing about Him. There is nothing like it in this world. That’s the motivation that drives this ministry.

A Man Who Learned to Seek

Let me tell you about a man who did not always seek God this way. There was a season when he gave God whatever time was left after everything else got handled first. He knew in the back of his mind it was not his best, but he told himself it was enough.

Then several, spirit-breaking trials landed on him at once, and he had nothing left to run to but God. He prayed one specific prayer and purposed in his heart to seek God with everything he had. God answered. That could have been the end of the story, one prayer, one answer, filed away as a good memory.

It was not the end. It was the beginning of a pattern that never stopped. Trial after trial, God acted in his life in ways he could not explain by timing or his own effort. Not once. Over and over, across years, until he could no longer call it anything but God Himself. Psalm 27:8 became the verse he lived inside of. Your face, LORD, I will seek. He was not reciting a nice sentiment. He was describing what diligent seeking had cost him and what it had given him in return, and there was no comparison between the two.

The reward was never the outcome of any single trial. The reward was God, showing up again and again, until that man knew Him, not just knew about Him.

Have You Experienced God Himself?

Not information about God. Not a doctrine you can recite. Not a single answered prayer you can point to once and move on from. Have you seen Him in His Word until He stopped being a subject and became a Person? Have you watched Him act in your life providentially, more than once, in ways too specific to explain away, until you knew it was Him and not time and chance?

If you have not, Hebrews 11:6 is telling you why. Diligence is the door. God is not hiding from those who seek Him with their whole heart. He rewards that kind of seeking, and the reward is Himself. Nothing you could ask Him for compares to what He gives when He gives you Himself.

Asking God for blessings is not wrong. But comfortable Christianity stops there. It asks for gifts and never asks for the Giver. You can read a heart in its prayers. Does it only ask God for things (over and over), or does it ask to know God?

Listen to your own church pray. How many prayers ask for gifts? How many prayers ask for God Himself? How many ask to know God more deeply, or simply thank Him for who He is? How many pray for the things God is concerned about like lost souls? Comfortable Christians reach for God’s hand (gifts only) and skip His face (God Himself).
