A Few Minutes with God

Beholding God: 52 Weeks of Diligently Seeking Him

Most Christians know a great deal about God. Far fewer have taken a few quiet minutes to simply look at Him. We attend. We listen. We take notes. We hold firm opinions about doctrine. Yet many of us could not say when we last stood still and considered who He is.

This page exists to change that.

Look at Him

David knew what he wanted most. “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord” (Psalm 27:4, NKJV). One thing. Not a list of requests. He wanted to look at God.

To behold is to look long and let what you see change you. You become like what you look at. Look at a screen all day, and you will begin to look like the screen. Look at God, and you will begin to look like Him.

This matters more than most of us admit. Jesus said, “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3). Knowing about God is easy. Knowing Him takes time.

What You Will Find Here

Each week brings one short meditation you can hear or read. Every one follows the same pattern: a verse of Scripture, a meditation of a few minutes, a task for the week, and a prayer. It is short enough for a morning drive and weighty enough to carry into Monday. Listen to the audio, follow along with the written script, or do both.

The fifty-two weeks are divided into four seasons of thirteen weeks each:

  • Season 1: Beholding the Father. Who He is, what He knows and rules, how He deals with us, and the relationship He offers.
  • Season 2: Beholding the Son. The character of Christ, from the incarnation to the throne.
  • Season 3: Beholding the Spirit. His work in creation, in Scripture, and in the life of the believer.
  • Season 4: Beholding God in His Word. Thirteen books of the Bible, from Habakkuk to Hebrews, each showing a different face of the same God.

In every season we are looking at the one God as Scripture presents Him. The Godhead is not a puzzle to solve. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are the one true God, and this God can be known.

How to Use It

Before you listen or read, open your own Bible to the verse and read the verses around it. A single verse is a window, and the context is the room. Let the passage speak first.

Then do not skip the task for the week. The few minutes you spend listening will not change you. What you do with the next seven days will. Each task is small on purpose.

Go slowly. One meditation per week is enough. If you miss a week, do not try to catch up in one sitting. Pick up where you are. And if you can, share it with a spouse, a friend, your family, or a class. What is spoken aloud and discussed is remembered.

A Fair Warning

It is possible to listen to a meditation, enjoy the thought, and walk away the same person. Hearing about God is not the same as beholding Him. Some weeks will comfort you. Others will confront you. A God who is holy, who sees everything, and who judges rightly cannot be met without being challenged. That is not a flaw in the series. It is what happens when we actually look at Him.

These meditations are only worth what they lead you to in the Word. Follow every verse back to your Bible and dig deeper.

Begin with a Holy God

You do not need to be an expert. You do not need to be a long-time Christian. You only need a willingness to slow down and look.

God promises that He is “a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). He does not say those who glance, or those who visit now and then. He says those who diligently seek. So begin this year with that in mind. Fifty-two weeks. A few minutes with each. One God, worth beholding.

Let us begin with a holy God and let us take our time.
