Pray with Humility

“Humble yourselves… and He will lift you up.” (James 4:10)

Reflection:
In a quiet corner of the temple, a tax collector stands, head bowed, praying, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13). While a Pharisee boasts nearby, this man’s humility touches God’s heart, and he leaves justified. 1 Peter 5:6 says, “Humble yourselves… that He may lift you up,” and Psalm 25:9 adds, “He guides the humble in what is right.”

Humility isn’t always easy—it means admitting we don’t have it all together. It means considering others more highly than ourselves. The tax collector didn’t hide his flaws; he brought them to God, trusting in His mercy.

Think about a time you owned a mistake and felt God’s grace lift you. Maybe it’s pride in a relationship or a need to control that’s holding you back. Humble prayer opens the door to God’s guidance and strength, like a friend who listens when you’re honest. The tax collector’s simple plea didn’t just clear his conscience; it brought him into God’s favor. Try approaching God with that same openness today. Your humility could lead to His lifting, showing you the way forward with clarity and peace.

What pride’s blocking your humble cry?

Today’s Challenge: Pray Luke 18:13 and James 4:10: “God, mercy on [my pride].” Stay low, expect lifting. The tax collector’s plea won grace; yours could too.

Prayer: God, the tax collector’s cry shows my proud heart. Break me humble, lift me with Your mercy, and guide my steps. You do not despise the humble; You do not despise a humble heart. Lord, help me keep focused on humility as you use me to glorify You in Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
