Day 243: Pursuing God’s Kindness in Covenant Loyalty

Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:7

So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather, and you shall eat bread at my table continually.”

Comfortable Christianity forgives the deserving and calls it love. Are you pursuing God’s kindness through covenant loyalty, the kind that reaches for the undeserving? Ephesians 4:32 commands, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.” Hebrews 13:1 is blunt: “Let brotherly love continue.”

Reflection:

David did not have to remember Mephibosheth. Saul’s grandson was crippled, powerless, and posed no threat either way. David sought him out because a covenant made years earlier with Jonathan still bound him. Earnestly pursuing God is not measured by how you treat people who can repay you. It is measured by what you do for the ones who cannot. David’s covenant loyalty was not sentiment. It was obedience with a long memory.

Today’s Challenge:

Find someone today you have no obligation to help, a stranger, a rival, someone who has wronged you, and show them kindness anyway. Don’t dress it up. Just do it, and let the discomfort remind you what covenant loyalty actually costs.

Prayer:

God, David kept covenant with Jonathan long after Jonathan was gone. Give me that kind of memory for grace. Let me extend kindness to people who never earned it, the way You extended it to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
