Seek God’s Comfort in Prayer

“The God of all comfort… comforts us.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Reflection:
David’s hiding in a cave, running from Saul’s pursuit, yet he writes, “Your rod and staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). In his fear, he finds God’s nearness, turning a dark moment into a song of trust. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,” and Matthew 11:28 invites, “Come to Me… and I will give you rest.”

Loss or pain can leave us feeling alone, but David’s psalm reminds us that God’s comfort is always near. Maybe you’re carrying grief (a lost dream, a broken relationship) or just a heavy day. David didn’t push through on his own; he leaned into God’s presence, finding peace that carried him. David often “strengthened himself in the Lord.” Think about a time God’s comfort felt real, maybe through a verse or a quiet moment. That’s His promise—to be close when you’re hurting. Try bringing your pain to Him today, like a child running to a parent. David’s cave prayers didn’t just sustain him; they gave us psalms that comfort millions. Your prayer could bring the rest you need and equip you to comfort others too.

What grief needs God’s comfort?

Today’s Challenge: Read Psalm 23 slowly, pray Matthew 11:28: “Jesus, comfort [my pain].” David’s comfort wrote psalms. What psalm(s) will you write?

Prayer: Merciful God, David’s cave cries show Your nearness. Wrap my broken places with Your comfort, turning pain into praise. Hold me close. Keep me close. “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the House of the Lord. Forever.” In Jesus’ name, Amen.
