What Do You Desire Most? Where You Spend Your Time Reveals Where Your Heart Truly Is

Imagine this for a moment…
If you could have anything in the world—right now—what would it be? What do you desire most? Where do you spend the majority of your time, your thoughts, your energy, and your resources?

Pause and let that question settle deep in your heart. Be honest with yourself before the Lord.

Jesus Himself gives us the answer in Scripture:
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
And again, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Luke 12:34).

Your daily choices are not neutral—they are a mirror. The place you invest your time is the place your heart has already gone.

So… was your first answer to see God? Was it to behold His glory, to know Him more intimately, to dwell in His presence? Or did something else rise up first—work, entertainment, relationships, success, comfort?

If the honest answer in your heart is anything other than God Himself, Scripture lovingly but firmly invites you to examine your ways.

When you love God first and above all, your life will reflect it every single day.
Jesus taught, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

When He is truly first, your heart beats with His heartbeat. You get excited about opportunities to reach lost souls and help people learn about Jesus—because that is exactly what He commanded: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations… teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).

You will use every talent and gift He has given you for His glory, just as the faithful servants did in the parable of the talents: “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your lord” (Matthew 25:21, 23). Your days will overflow with purpose, joy, and unshakable peace because “in Your presence is fullness of joy” (Psalm 16:11).

But if that excitement is missing…
If reaching the lost doesn’t stir your heart, if using your talents for God’s kingdom feels secondary, if keeping Him first in your daily schedule is a struggle rather than your greatest delight—then we must ask ourselves the hard but necessary question the Bible itself poses:

“Do you love God the way you should?”

The Lord commands, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5; see also Mark 12:30).

He promises, “You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).
And He invites honest self-examination: “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves” (2 Corinthians 13:5).

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24).

It takes an honest heart to stand before Scripture and say, “Lord, I could do better for You… and by Your grace, I will.” That kind of honesty is the very doorway to deeper intimacy with Him.

Take these bold steps today to align your heart fully with God’s:

• Open your Bible and pray right now: “Lord, show me where my treasure truly is and turn my heart completely toward You” (Psalm 119:10-11; Proverbs 3:5-6).
• Confess any divided loyalties with honesty: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
• Choose daily to seek His face first: Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth (Colossians 3:2), and watch Him add every good thing in its proper place (Matthew 6:33).
• Step out in love for the lost: Ask the Lord today for one opportunity to share Jesus, remembering that “the harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few” (Matthew 9:37-38).

Dear friend, God is not distant—He is eagerly waiting for you to turn your whole heart toward Him. He delights in those who seek Him with all they are.

Will you examine your heart against His Word today? Will you let Him rekindle the fire so that your greatest desire becomes simply to see God?

He is worthy. And He is waiting.
