Pray with Persistence

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find.” (Matthew 7:7)

Reflection:
A widow keeps showing up at a judge’s door, asking for justice until he finally gives in, saying, “This woman’s persistence is wearing me out” (Luke 18:5). Jesus uses her story to teach us to pray without giving up. Colossians 4:2 says, “Devote yourselves to prayer,” and 1 Thessalonians 5:17 urges, “Pray continually.”

Persistence in prayer can feel tough, especially when answers seem slow. It’s exhausting. It stretches every bit of our faith when we prostrate ourselves in prayer. It’s even more exhausting when we fast and prayer. It wears you out. But the widow’s determination shows us that keeping at it matters. Maybe you’ve been praying for something—a job, a loved one, a breakthrough—and it feels like nothing’s moving. Her story reminds us that God isn’t annoyed by our repeated requests; He’s a faithful Father who listens.

Think about a time you kept praying and saw God move, even if it took time. That’s the power of not giving up. Keep knocking on heaven’s door today, trusting God’s timing. The widow’s persistence won her case; your steadfast prayer could win the answer you’re seeking.

What delayed answer needs your relentless knock?

Today’s Challenge: Set three alarms, pray Matthew 7:7: “Lord, I ask for [this need].” The widow’s knocks won justice; yours could win breakthrough.

Prayer: God, the widow’s grit shows me how persistence in prayer matters. Even though I have prayed in the past until I’m exhausted. Renew my strength in prayer to keep moving forward one step, one day at a time. Make me relentless in prayer, trusting Your faithful answer. Open the door. Answer me, ‘O God. Have mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
