Martha’s house buzzed with activity as she frantically prepared an elaborate meal for Jesus and his disciples, but her sister Mary ignored the kitchen chaos to sit quietly at Jesus’ feet, drinking in his teaching—and Jesus affirmed that Mary had chosen “the better” portion. Ecclesiastes 7:29 laments how humanity has complicated God’s simple, upright design by chasing “many schemes,” while Matthew 6:33 gives the clear command: “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” What clutter in your life (overpacked schedules, nagging worries, endless distractions) is crowding out the simple joy of being with God? Simplifying your pursuit isn’t about laziness or escaping responsibility; it’s about laser-focused clarity on the one thing that matters eternally while letting everything else fall into its proper place. Mary’s undivided attention at Jesus’ feet fed her soul with truth that would sustain her for a lifetime, while Martha’s elaborate preparations grew cold and ultimately proved unnecessary. When you intentionally clear away the noise and busyness, God’s presence naturally rises to the top as your highest priority, and a deep peace follows that no amount of striving could manufacture. While culture celebrates multitasking and constant productivity as virtues, kingdom wisdom recognizes that true power flows from choosing the better, singular focus.
